#WirelessWednesday – What is Dali’s approach to Small Cells?

August 5, 2015

What are Small Cells?

“SmallCell” is a generic name for a compact radio equipment providing coverage and capacity in a limited geographical area. It is a quick “point relief” for traffic hotspots or coverage gaps. Small Cells are also known by various marketing terms, e.g. micro-, nano-, pico- or femto-cells. Small Cell equipments are typically provided as single- or dual-band radio units handling a single mobile operator.

Dali’s Approach

Small Cells are cheaper and effective solutions as point relief for small geographical areas. When deployed in larger quantities, the complexity of organization, management and interference control increases significantly, as each small cell needs to be handled as individual and separate radio cell. When multiple radio bands or multiple mobile operators are required, several small cell units maybe need to be installed in parallel, again adding to complexity.

Dali’s RF Routing, multi-band and multi-operator capabilities remove the complexity of small-cell networks through its ability for dynamic and fully software-controlled reconfiguration. Operator’s RF signals can be distributed to the antenna locations as needed in an “any-to-any” mode within the service area. Dali’s solution simplifies the complexity of small-cell networks by maintaining the benefits and removing the constraints.
