#WirelessWednesday – Can you use any DAS and BTS systems to enable RAN Virtualization, or do you have to use Dali’s SDN Radio Router™?

June 24, 2015

There are two main RAN virtualization concepts. One that virtualizes the baseband resources, often referred to as C-RAN, and one that goes beyond the baseband resources by virtualizing also the most valuable resources – spectrum.

RAN virtualization that enables sharing of both the baseband resources and the spectrum is only enabled by Dali’s SDN Radio Router™. With Dali’s end-to-end digital RF processing and software configurability, mobile coverage and capacity are mobilized. The base station signal is converted to digital, routable packets allowing routing of radio capacity from any source to any destination point within the network.

Since the SDN Radio Router supports all global frequency bands and different mobile operator’s infrastructure, and is agnostic to technologies and base station vendors, it can in effect, pool all the base station resources and define which specific packets are sent and received at the antenna points. SDN Radio Router enables the connection of any of the incoming data streams (cell feeds) of one or more base stations (2G, 3G, 4G and 5G in the future) to any of the connected remote units.
RAN virtualization, through SDN Radio Router, enables a more efficient use of the most precious resource: RF spectrum.
